As with the others, I started from a combination of the 3D and 2D sketches.
Here you can see the 3D sketch starting to appear.
At this point I went on my own tangent and started to make it more 3D by adding this step like thingamy.
I wasn't happy with the bottom half so I copied the top over to start again and duplicated it to the bottom.
Then I added the silo-like cylinders back in.
The result.
This was some experimentation. I was looking into replacing the cylinders with spheres. Didn't last.
Still not happy with it, I copied the corner part and made a new shape with that and built from this.
This is the component I created to make the above and below shape.
This shape I created with the component was the basis for the end model.
I added the cylinders back in.
I 'stepped' the cylinders so they were more interesting and less plain.
Now I added in an element from the 2D sketch and the experimentation from before.
A detail shot of the element I added to the model at the base of the cylinders.
I grouped them all together and vertically flipped it to create this stage of the model. This added another axis of symmetry to the model.
This is some experimentation with the placement of the camera for the final image.
Another camera experiment.
And another.
And another. This one is more interesting than anything else, not really in the running for final composition, but its cool how the square suddenly seems more rounded from the top.
On to the renders. This one was interesting but again its not the final.
Another exploration of the model, this time its in the middle of the model.
This is the same area, but its a different view.
This was to be the final render, but after checking it, I thought it was to blurry. It is the inside of one of the curved shapes (like in the above image).
Here is the final render....
At this stage I drew on some entourage instead of drawing some extra 3D earlier on. (I did this with all my models)
...and this is the final with entourage added in photoshop.
