Final hand in post

Here are the links to the hand in requirements:

Week 5 - Seven Final Entouraged Images

Here are my final images for this hand in, complete with entourage.
Datum
 (File Size: 213kb - 1920x1080)

Contrast
 (File Size: 370kb - 1920x1080)

Hierarchy
 (File Size: 219kb - 1920x1080)

Figure Ground

Proportion - Composition
 (File Size: 346kb - 1920x1080)

Rhythm - Repetition
 (File Size: 317kb - 1920x1080)

Symmetry
 (File Size: 147kb - 1920x1080)

'Symmetry' - Documentation

As with the others, I started from a combination of the 3D and 2D sketches.

Here you can see the 3D sketch starting to appear.

'Rhythm' - Documentation

To start with I tried to replicate completely the 3D sketch.
To do this I created a semicircle using arcs and had them at different heights like in the sketch.

I smoothed the crest of each bump and duplicated the component to create this complete circle.

'Proportion' - Documentation

I don't seem to have taken many documenting screenshots for this model.

Basically I recreated the 3D sketch in sketchup to start with.
Then after some fiddling I made a smaller version of the large back curved shape and repeated it many times in a semi circle like fashion inside the semi circular pipe. I duplicated this to the other side. It created a fancy/interesting looking shadow too which was a bonus.

I grouped them all together and then made them smaller and rotated the group different ways until I ended up with what you see below.

'Hierarchy' - Documentation

So for Hierarchy this is the base I started off with.

I 'offset' the large top triangle many times and pulled it up to create what you see below. I also 3D-ified the other triangles and moved them down the side.

'Figure Ground' - Documentation

In this part of the 'Figure Ground' development I am trying to directly replicate the sketch with some height alterations.

I have made the model very tall but tried to make it not seem so from the top view.

'Datum' - Documentation

With the Datum 3D model I tried to stay true to my initial 3D sketch.

I first created a curved 3D line and turned that into a component.

Then I duplicated this a few times.

'Contrast' - Documentation

So I started with a box, with a hole through it, and in the centre a cylinder running through. The circle hole and cylinder contrasts with the square of the box.

To add contrast I detail up one side with plenty if circles, Then I pull them all out to different lengths. Not one circle remained in its starting position.

Week 2 - Hand Drawn Sketches

These are my 3d sketches for each principle. I started out thinking they needed to be seperate from the textures but then realised I could use the textures as inspiration for the 3d sketches, so I did.

Initial Contrast Sketch - I stopped this sketch because I decided it was getting too complex.

Week 2 - Repeatable Pattern Documentation

Alright, here comes quite a hefty blog post. Brace yourselves.

In the following image I created a version of one of my symmetry sketches and then turned it into a pattern...
(92.4kb - 1240x884)

...then checked out how that looked when I repeated it on an A4 page.

Week 1 - Original Scans (with comments)

Below are the my original scans for the 21 'design principles' sketches. The sketches in the images demonstrate the 7 design principles and, in addition to that, the scans also demonstrate 'design principle' elements.

(209.6k - 2048x1448)
Datum
The above image shows contrast in the large area of black sandwiched between the two white spaces. There is also the asymmetry in the image, with half the image being the white sketch and the other half, the black section and a white 'cut-out' area. The black shape almost hints at being defined as 'datum' in the top left corner as well.

Contrast
The contrast scan has contrast within it too. Again the black contrasts against the white, but but in addition to this the green contrast against the black. This scan also includes a hint of hierarchy and figure ground with the sketches in the foreground being more important than the green shape behind it or the black of the background.

Hierarchy
This image of the hierarchy sketches also uses the hierarchy and figure ground techniques. The sketches in the foreground are the most important thing, followed by the layered objects behind to the left. Again there is the contrast of the black and the white. The arrangement and composition of the pencil, the green card, and the pencil case on the left of the sketches, is positioned on the bottom left point in the 'rule of thirds' creating a sort of focal point in the image.
